Therapy for Trauma & PTSD

After an overwhelming or frightening experience, you may continue to feel its effects long after the immediate danger has passed. Trauma can show up as intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, feeling constantly on guard, emotional numbness, or difficulty trusting yourself and others. Some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while others experience distress that does not fit neatly into a diagnosis. Whatever your experience, therapy can help you understand your reactions and find ways to feel more secure and connected.

At Desert to Peaks Psychology, our team uses a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes collaboration, choice, and a manageable pace. Depending on your needs and the clinician you work with, treatment may include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness or grounding practices. These approaches can help you process distressing memories, work through beliefs such as self-blame, and develop skills for responding to triggers and difficult emotions. We work with you to determine when and how to approach painful experiences.

Healing may involve sleeping more comfortably, feeling more present in relationships, or having greater freedom to do things that trauma has made difficult. You can begin by sharing what feels manageable. Together, we work toward reducing the hold of past experiences and strengthening your sense of agency in the present.
